MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Q&A: NAMOWAN KIRBY ON CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY
Namowan Kirby is an Ojibwe member of the IATSE 891 Grips Department. He’s worked in the film industry for 15 years with credits that include ‘Shōgun’, ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’, and ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’. He is also a screenwriter and one of the founders of Tatus Creative, an organization amplifying Indigenous artists, actors, producers and directors to advance authentic representation and inclusion of Indigenous peoples in the arts and entertainment industries.

Alicia Chowen loves the art of styling Black hair and has been on a path to expand mentorship and training opportunities for other filmworkers and hair stylists to make the industry stronger and more inclusive. After joining 891’s Hair Department in 2024 and working on big productions like “Yellowjackets” she shares how her journey into motion picture production began and what she’s doing to create pathways for more Black hair stylists to enjoy the benefits of working in film in BC.

SPOTLIGHT: ORGANIZING EXPANDS FILM WORKER POWER ACROSS BC
Organizing efforts paved the way for 891 to sign two historic term agreements in Kelowna and a production agreement on Vancouver Island — increasing the pool of unionized domestic productions, and helping members and more motion picture workers across the province gain benefits and Union protections.
